Flotilla Thrilla

13 June 2011

There’s simply nothing better than messing about on boats.
And you can’t get any wetter than by messing about on boats.
With me,
Oh don’t you see.
So come on let’s mess around.
And I promise I won’t let you drown
Just yet.

Possibly the first of its kind, the Flotilla Thrilla is a waterborne open mic-type evening of performance that will take place in punts, on the River Cherwell. Read the rest of this entry »

Moogieman through a twin lens reflex

12 May 2011

Moogieman

First decent pic (of me) taken with a Welta Reflekta that I picked up for £15 on ebay – perhaps because it wasn’t my finger on the shutter release. It was taken at the Catweazle club, Oxford, about a month ago (it can take time to get films developed).

I’m finding it hard to identify and date my particular model Reflekta (earlier versions were called the Reflecta). None of the photos I can find on the internet look quite like it.

For those of you who are interested, it’s a twin lens reflex (TLR), which means it has a taking lens (which focuses the image) and a viewing lens which projects the image onto a screen in the viewfinder. The two lenses are focused in sync, allowing you Read the rest of this entry »

Diana vs Action Sampler

Tried out my latest lomographic acquisition, the Action Sampler, at George’s Jamboree, a high-calibre monthly open mic night hosted by local performance poet George Chopping.

The Action Sampler is a fairly gimmicky multiple image film camera manufactured by Lomography.

It takes four sequential shots over a period of about half a second using four separate lenses that each cover a quarter of the standard 35 mm frame. Shutter speed is around 1/100th of a second and the aperture is fixed Read the rest of this entry »

Steampunk DJ equipment

6 March 2011

Gaumont dual gramaphone

No, not really a set of turntables for Edwardian DJs but in fact the Chronophone – an early sytem for synchronising sound and film, invented by Leon Gaumont and demonstrated in his Gaumont Palace theatre in 1910. Since gramaphone records only played long enough to accompany 200 feet of film, the dual-platter system allows records to be swapped to give a more-or-less continuous soundtrack.

Interestingly, the system used a compressed-air amplifier (sufficient to deliver sound to an audience of 4000), which is how I stumbled upon it. I’ve been looking into purely fluidic sound systems and will hopefully be posting Read the rest of this entry »

New release: SFOM EP

15 February 2011

SFOM EP by MoogiemanA new Moogieman EP is now available, featuring brand new recordings of Snow Falls On Mars, Louis Bleriot’s Moustache and Economy Of Love. The EP, officially titled the SFOM EP, also includes The Breda.

Louis Bleriot’s Moustache and Economy Of Love are straightforward ‘live’ recordings made with a couple of microphones. Snow Falls On Mars is a more elaborate affair, recorded over a period of about a year (though not continuously Read the rest of this entry »

Ghostly images from Catweazle and Port Mahon

Faceometer at Catweazle 16th anniversary

More lomoghraphy: photosets are now on Flickr of the Catweazle open mic’s 16th anniversary on 21 October and the 5 November gig at the Port Mahon featuring Swindlestock, Rachel Ruscombe-King and Moogieman.

The Port Mahon photos are my first attempt at reverse cross-processing – developing a colour negative film in a colour slide process. This is tricky to get right, tending to result in very low contrast images, as these pictures demonstrate. However, I definitely want to try again as the slightly luminescent colours and bursting lights give a very interesting effect, when things turn out well.

Lomo moogo

12 October 2010

Moogieman at Deja VuSo, I’m getting into Lomography, about 20 years after Viennese pioneers invented it (or should that be rediscovered it).

My interest was sparked when a friend showed me his camera and directed me to a page on flickr. I clicked through a stream of photos that are, in conventional terms, largely unexceptional yet I found them strangely compelling. Read the rest of this entry »
