Do Kangaroos really exist or is it all a conspiracy theory?

5 March 2012

An office discussion, sparked off by a chance encounter with a packet of Kangaroo Jerky leads to speculation that kangaroos are just too improbable to be real. Could they be made up?

A colleague somehow came by a packet of Kangaroo Jerky, made from ‘meat … derived from animals that received postmortem veterinary inspection and were found sound and healthy in every way.’ Being too squeamish to eat it himself he sent round an email asking if anyone else would. Moogieman and Vincent Lynch in Ilford HP5

29 February 2012

Moogieman and Vincent Lynch

Unfortunately, the busier I am with gigs and presentations on Skylab (such as the recent Pecha Keucha for Art Is Just A Word at the Oxford Hub) the less time I have for this site and for photography. However, I managed to find time last night to develop a roll of Ilford HP5 400 ASA that’s been sitting on my desk for a few weeks.

Hidden amongst the silver halide particles were some delightful shots from George’s Jamboree of Music, Comedy and Poetry Possibly from January, including a few of Moogieman and Vincent Lynch. Read the rest of this entry »

Read all about it: plans for 2012 in Moogie News

2 February 2012

Moogie News issue 3 p2

It might not seem like it given the lack of updates recently, but 2012 has got off to a busy start, as should be apparent from the latest edition of Moogie News – the pre-hot metal type newsletter.

Get your copy at Moogieman’s regular open mic appearances: Catweazle, The Harcourt Arms, George’s Jamboree and the Firry Mic. Or make a samizdat copy off a friend, or get in touch with Moogieman (preferably from a public phonebox) to arrange a pick up.

The Magi and the Interpretation of Dreams

23 December 2011

A Christmas story written for the concert at the Isis Tavern on 17 December.

There are three wise-guys: Ego, Id and Superego. It’s the 25th of December, except they don’t call it that but something else expressed in a weird Babylonian base-60 number system. Id is peering through his OWL or overwhelmingly large telescope trying to observe Princess Salome taking a shower in Herod’s palace 800 miles away when he spots a strange star on the horizon.

My origami Christmas tree

16 December 2011

origami Christmas Tree design.

I came across this design while doing research for my work Christmas tree competition. We ended up building a white 6-tier version plus trunk topped with a small stellated dodecahedron. The whole thing is about 80 cm high.

I’ve been booked to play a few numbers at the Isis Tavern tomorrow and I was trying to come up with a Christmas-themed song to go with my Fruedian–Yulean semi-prose poem.

While folding one of the tiers I had the idea of writing a song Read the rest of this entry »

Alderney adventure: taking off in a Trislander

9 November 2011

EBX031

One of the more memorable experiences of my recent trip to Alderney was flying there on the 18-seater, three propeller-engined Trislander. The 18 seats include those of the pilot and co-pilot and we all boarded separately through car-type doors along the fuselage.

There’s no aisle so we sat two abreast, right next to the whirring wing-mounted propellers. The Trislander, manufactured by Britten-Norman, is an elongated version of their Islander aircraft. In order to keep the pitch Read the rest of this entry »

The history of the Kaddiska Mu-Stellar Club

25 October 2011

Last Thursday was the 17th anniversary of Oxford’s legendary Catweazle Club. This is a semi-prose poem I wrote specially for the occasion.

There is an open mic.
There is an open mic in Oxford.
The planet Oxford that orbits the Sopdet binary star system in the western arm of the Eesar galaxy.
Today, the Kaddiska Mu-Stellar Club is 17,000 years old and is thought by many to be the longest-running open mic in the local cluster.
Or at least this side of the Chiltern nebula.

Big in the Bailiwicks

24 October 2011

MP3-1

Well just Alderney so far, which is in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but we’re on our way. The trip to Fort Clonque – a mid-nineteenth century British coastal battery connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway – was a resounding success. Eleven of us, connected to one degree or another through Oxford’s famous Catweazle Club, flew out there at the beginning of October to enjoy some sea, sand and songwriting, and to play a gig at the Campania, a pub in the main town, St Anne.

The gig went down well and was a good chance to meet some locals, who were friendly and welcoming, if slightly bemused by our performances. But we were also charmed by the lanscape, some of it picturesue like the craggy cliffs and beautiful white beaches, some of it post agri-industrial like the abandoned farm machinery, steam cranes and water pumps, and the extensive Second World War coastal fortifications. All set for Alderney

3 October 2011

The next moogieman gig will be at a more far-flung location than usual. The Campania pub sits high among windswept rocks. The cracked baroque facade is occasionally hit by spray from the crashing waves below. On clear days its haughty turrets are visible from the coast of France.

But inside there is an ocean of calm … until, that is, moogieman performs his song about the International Obfuscated C Code Contest – The Apostate Priest Of The PDP-11. Read the rest of this entry »
